Hadleigh Hare members, Andrew and Deborah Stewart have been keen triathletes for many years and the St Neots Sprint Triathlon on 9 May was their first event for 2023. ATW are renowned for hosting a well organised event which attracts novices, elites and those who should know better(!) alike.
The forecast proved to be wrong thankfully and the weather was just perfect, although the 750m river swim was a rather chilly 15.4 degrees centigrade. Both Andrew and Deb found the swim more challenging than usual due to the strength of the current on the upstream section.
Once on the bike, the winter training paid off. The scenic, undulating, 24K course was a pleasure to ride and the pair were soon overtaking their fellow competitors. The course was well marked and easy to follow.
The 2-lap 5K run, which is contained in the Riverside Meadows, was again well thought out and supported by enthusiastic marshals and spectators, which gave the event a real buzz. Both Andrew and Deb have been attending the Hares improver's sessions and could feel the improvement in their paces.
Although Andrew was a little disappointed with his final position of 5th in his age group in a time of 1 hour 46 minutes, Deb was very pleased to finish first in her age group in a time of 1 hour 58 minutes, with over a four minute lead ahead of second place.
